A Q&A with CHT Architects and SORA Interiors

As the highly anticipated launch of Soliana’s inaugural project, Pearl in Brighton, approaches, we had the opportunity to sit down with David Carabott, Founding Director of CHT Architects, and Chantelle Balliro, Executive Manager of SORA Interiors. Together, they shared insights into the vision behind the project and discussed the unique experience of working with Soliana, highlighting Sonia’s distinctive approach that sets this development apart.

Q: Tell us about the vision for Pearl.

We approached this project with the understanding that we were creating high-end apartments that would ultimately become someone’s home, so it was essential to incorporate the key elements of a typical house into the design. Recognising that many residents may be downsizing from larger properties, we focused on spacious layouts, seamless indoor-outdoor connections, and creating the touches of luxury needed to ensure it was comfortable.

Q: How do you balance aesthetics with functionality?

The interiors were really driven by Sonia. Her vision was very clear from the outset – wanting a design that felt warm and gentle, without being too bold. We focused on creating timeless, neutral colour palettes, allowing future homeowners the freedom to personalise the space and truly make it their own.

The finishes are soft and subtle which perfectly align with Soliana’s luxe, feminine brand. We focused on creating organic forms, and used natural materials like timber and stone, which Sonia personally sourced from Europe to ensure everything was perfect.

Ensuring we balanced the aesthetics with functionality, as mentioned above we worked closely with Sonia to ensure the floorplans were designed like homes. Therefore, they include ample storage, key drops, as much natural light as possible and more –  these apartments are as liveable as they are beautiful.

Q: What sets this project apart from other high-end developments?

One of the key factors that sets Pearl apart from other luxury developments is the hands-on approach maintained throughout the entire project. Unlike typical developments where the initial vision can become diluted over time, Sonia’s consistent involvement ensured her original vision was realised in every detail.

From the start, Sonia’s commitment was clear: spare no expense. This approach allowed us to incorporate premium features without the constraints of value management. In fact, as we walked through the site during construction, we found opportunities to ADD more marble and enhance storage rather than cutting back. As designers, this is such a rare opportunity!

Q: How has it been working with Soliana?

Working with Soliana has been exceptional – this project truly does raise the bar. Sonia’s approach has been as if she were designing the space for herself, incorporating her personal experience as a mother and homemaker into every detail. She has considered how to maximise space and efficiency, from thoughtful entertaining spaces to features like LED lighting in the wardrobes, mirroring what she values in her own home. The feminine touch she has brought to the project is evident throughout the process, adding a unique and personal dimension to the design.

Q: what else makes this project special?

In addition to its prime location within walking distance of Church Street, the train station, and Brighton’s vibrant restaurants and retail, this project stands out for its unique amenities. It features a dog wash, this again was a reflections of Sonia’s dedication to creating a living environment that feels like a home to ensure that there was somewhere people could wash their fur-babies. Also, the entryway of the development is particularly noteworthy, with double-height voided ceilings that create a sense of luxury and grandeur, providing a true “welcome home” moment.
